Ski Touring Narvik / Skjomen

Ski touring in Skjomen, Northern Norway’s hidden ‘topptur´ gem — a large fjord surrounded by large peaks rising to over 1600 m, steep granite walls and glaciers. The fjord is known for having a slightly milder climate than the rest of the season, but the peaks are snow-covered until early in summer. While most guided groups flock to Lofoten or Lyngen, this place has stayed quite, despite its immene peaks and excellent ski touring terrain. I have lived in Narvik for a while, and Skjomen has stayed special to me. Possible ski tours are, amongst others, Meraftestinden (1348 m), a magnificent ski peak, the 1318 m high Gagnesaksla, offering fantastic views over the Frostisen glacier, or the Gagnesrenna, a 1000 m couloir right down to the fjord. The fit may want to attempt the 1724 m high summit of Frostisen.

Due to the fast access from Narvik, the area is well-suited for shorter trips of 4-6 days. This trip runs out of a new, high-standard Air BnB lodge in Skjomen (Skjomen Lodge >> Link), just 40 driving minutes away from Narvik. Narvik can be reached by train from Sweden, bus from Fauske (where you travel with me!) or via the airport Evenes.

Trips are bookable from mid-March to early June for 4-7 day (see below). The trip is primarily designed for smaller groups with intermediate or advanced ski touring experience. I avoid full packages and hotels, opting for a high-standard AirBnB with self-catering instead to make the trip accessible to groups of 2-4 skiers/split boarders. There are no shops or restaurants in Skjomen, so we need to bring in all the food (not included in the price) from Narvik.

By Mid-May, there is 24-hour light, with plenty of snow left on the higher, glaciated peaks. During this time, one can enjoy corn snow at midnight on north faces! Depending on snow-coverage, we may opt to stay in one of the mountain huts in higher elevations (to be decided closer to the tour date).

For the base trips (4 days), the prices are:
  • Group of 4: from NOK 7200 pp
  • Group of 3: from NOK 9700 pp

Dates (extendable to one week):
The price includes four days of guiding, three nights of accommodation and transport from Narvik and back. More days are possible. If snow cover is good, we may then move to Ersfjord and Tysfjord just to the south.
